Cockenzie Beach.
"The Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry" exhibition is on in Cockenzie until the end of next week so we went to have a look at it, it's just a couple of miles up the road from the battle site; Mrs TD had already seen it but she still chummed me along. As with the Prestonpans mural trail which was mentioned last Wednesday, and "The Great Scottish Tapestry," it was designed by Andrew Crummy as a community art project. It was made in 2010 and portrays the history of the eighteen months leading up to the battle (on September 21, 1745) between Johnny Cope and the Jacobites.
It was fairly obvious that the team learnt from the experience of this work as the later "Scottish" is much more interesting.
We had already taken Merlin for a walk on Portobello beach where we saw some people digging for fishing bait and others collecting buckies, a local name for cockles. The Old Lady used to regularly tell me that the only foods she could get down me when I was a toddler were cockles and custard though not, presumably, on the same plate. Later in the afternoon, we took him onto the beach at Cockenzie and watched this family exploring quite oblivious of the "seadoo" zooming around; it was bouncing about as though there was a heavy swell on but, in reality, the firth was fairly calm.
Before coming home we stopped at "The Goth" for lunch, it's worth mentioning as they have a notice in the bar which reads, "Unattended or messy kids will be given a shot of expresso and a puppy."
That amused me.
