Climate change
This beautiful old Scots Pine tree stands right on the edge of Loch Leven.
I visit it most days of the week with Mollie on our regular walk. There is another little beach just behind the trunk of the tree where a wooden bench used to stand. It marked the end of the outward leg of my walk and I used to sit and admire the view, spend time thinking through problems or take photos. Last winter we had so much rain that the water level of the Loch rose so that the little beach was submerged and the bench was standing in water. ( I have photos from 2011/12 which show the water line was about 2 -3 feet lower than it is now).
At the start of this winter the bench began to list forward and was removed by SNH who are custodians of the loch and it's shoreline. The water level has remained very high all through this winter and it has begun to wash away the sand and expose the root system of the tree. Its such a shame because it is a lovely tree with a magnificent canopy. I worry that if we get more high winds that the tree's roots might become fatally weakened and it may topple. Is this a natural cycle or is it climate change at work? Hard to say.
