Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Rolling Stones - Time Is On My Side (recorded 24 June 1964, Olympic Sound, Barnes)
The Stones recorded this a month after Irma Thomas's version was out on a B-side, and released their version on the US album Twelve By Five, and as a single later in the year in America, France and elsewhere, but not in the UK. It was their first US Top Ten hit. This is that version, and has an organ introduction played by sixth Stone Ian Stewart.
I remember buying it at the time on a four-track import French EP with a picture sleeve, and still prefer it to the more polished second version that was on their British album The Rolling Stones No. 2. That was recorded at the Chess Studios in Chicago IL that November, and is the one now more commonly found on compilation albums.
A third version was finally a UK single in 1982, recorded live on their US tour of 1981, taken from their album Still Life.
Time Is On My Side was written by Jerry Ragovoy under the pseudonym Norman Meade. Trombonist Kai Winding was the first to record it, in 1963, when it was an instrumental, but with a chorus singing the title and the line "You'll come runnin' back". Additional lyrics were written at the last minute by Jimmy Norman the following year for the vocal version by Irma Thomas.
