St Andrews Church, Didling
There is a tiny Shepherd’s Church on the back road between Bepton and Treyford in the shadow of the South Downs. St Andrew’s at Didling (you have to be really careful how you word that;-) ) is a simple old church, whitewashed, and set all alone in the hills. With no electricity, it’s lit by candles which give a lovely feeling.
The South Downs shepherds used to come here to worship. Later in the year, it will be surrounded by sheep, but just now the sheep are all in-by for lambing.
The present church dates from the 13th century with very little restoration,
although there was a church here in Saxon times too. Its single bell dates back to 1587, the solid chunky font is Saxon, and the tiny space has a humble peaceful feeling.
This is the most rural and original church I think I’ve ever seen, quite beautiful. Today I lit some of the candles on the ends of the pews, but the photo which pleased me best is this one of the simple candelabras which provide added light over the altar. I think it's still used once a month, isn't that remarkable?
