Precisely one week ago a pizza restaurant one street away from my office burst into spectacular flames. The sky filled with orange fumes and grey smoke and every fire engine from miles around filled the streets. As the afternoon wore on we watched the roof crumble into charred timbers from our desks. Now it's a deserted shell and a dense latticework of scaffolding has sprouted from the front like steel ivy...
