Had a meeting at lunchtime which was a great source of sharing. Sometimes, the amount of effort required to achieve great things can seem disproportionate to the size of the achievement. Some people may be put off by this but I tend towards thinking that, like world records which are beaten by hundreths of a second, not whole seconds, it's the fine detail, the last bit of effort, the extra bit of push that separates the very good from the great. I'm all for getting students to challenge themselves to be great which will always require some substantial effort. So be it.
On a different but related theme....
My Year 9 class rocked today which was a real buzz. My, they are a talented crew :) We do a "4-minute mile" relay challenge where 16 different students each run 100m with a baton. The goal - to complete 1600m in under 4-minutes. (I know - it's longer than a mile but hey - it makes it a nice, round 4 laps.) They get the Roger Bannister story and the talk about believing in the impossible, and hopefully some of it sticks for longer than just the period. Anyway, last week we attempted it for the first time - a great 4.05 effort which, considering the baton was dropped and had to be recovered, was a great time. My wee keen-beans desperately wanted to do it again so we did.......3.58! I can't remember the last time a Year 9 class of mine achieved the feat. They're turning into a pretty special crew :)
It was J's birthday yesterday so after work today we headed to a funky wee cafe in Stoke for an after work drink and catch-up :) Happy birthday to you J :) - great to catch up after what has been a particularly busy period. I'm looking forward to some bike rides together now we both have some new wheels too!
