The Cupboard
I had occasion to go into The Cupboard today to find something. You know The Cupboard; no doubt you have one too, everyone has. It's that place where you put all the old photographs, the certificates, the cards you've kept from birthdays and anniversaries, and if your parents are no longer with you, all the papers they left behind that you just can't quite bring yourself to throw out. You've seen them all before on many occasions, but because you don't go in The Cupboard very often you just have to get them all out and look at them again. So what should only have taken five minutes ends up taking two hours.
Amongst my father's things in here are lots of items from his wartime service. Being a Sunderland man, he was in the Durham Light Infantry and served in Malta and Kos before being taken Prisoner of War by the Germans in October 1943. Although he was demobbed after the war he must have continued to receive these magazines; perhaps they were sent out to all ex-servicemen from the regiment. There's nothing of value and probably nothing unusual, but it may be of interest to a museum or record office, so one day I think I'll make some enquiries and see if anyone wants it. But not yet.
