I'm teaching English to my group of Milanese young people in a classroom which is part of the Modern Languages department of St Gregory, Cowley, Oxford. One poster in the room tells pupils that 94 per cent of the planet's population do not speak English as a first language. Another tells them that 75 per cent speak no English at all - a percentage that I find quite remarkable.
