Edinburgh Bridge #19 McKenzie Bridge
It was a fine evening as I looked out my office window and thought a walk home might be in order, but looking out is not the same as being out, and it was a darn sight chillier than I thought however I did set out and wandered down into Stockbridge in search of a Blip
In Between The Stock bridge and the Dean bridge there is a smallish bridge that does not seem to go anywhere. The bridge links the very posh houses of north Stockbridge (Danube St Dean Terrace & Ann St) with what is apparently un-built on ground to the south. This area was in the late 19th century a set of tenements that ran from India St and McKenzie place immediately to the North of the steep ground and Moray Place and Doune Terrace. These tenements were of an artisan nature which gradually fell into disrepair and were demolished in 1961 leaving the ground unoccupied and it is only in recent years that this ground has been re-claimed for use as allotments.
This whole area was owned back in the late 18th Century and early 19th century the local land owner was a certain artist Henry Reaburn and it was him who gave the land for the bridge which built in 1824 and pre-dates the Dean Bridge by 8 years and some 20 years after the rebuilt Stock Brig. It was originally called the St Bernard’s Bridge but at some point it was renamed the McKenzie bridge.
