The Green
The Green fails to live up to its name as the only green to be found lies in the potted plants to be found adorning this small open space just below Union Street. A steep set of stairs leads down from Union Street to the western end of the Green, and the Aberdeen Market lies to the East where a road comes in from Market Street.
This open space is roughly in the shape of a triangle. The appearance of the Green would be quite pleasant were it not for the buildings at the western and eastern end of the area. The Aberdeen Market building dominates the Green, a rather ugly concrete structure built in the 1970s. This building replaced another equally unpleasant market building with a similar overbearing appearance and footprint. On this occasion the new building is probably no worse than its predecessor.
The Green features today as I am having a meal at one of the restaurants on The Green this evening, the reasonably appropriately named Bistro Verde, a fish restaurant. It is next door to a pub named the Old Kings Highway, which I think is one of several claiming to be the oldest pub in Aberdeen.
