A First

This is not a good picture at all, but it is an important one, as for the first time I have actually identified a new species of bird seen in the garden. It was taken in haste through the window, so the best I could do. I doubt it will return today, as the rain has now set in.

A few days ago I thought I spotted a bird amongst the Tree Sparrows that looked a bit different and all I could think, after looking it up, was that it was a Reed Bunting. He appeared again today, spending a brief time picking up bits that were falling down from the fat ball feeders, as the sparrows pecked away at them above. Very similar plumage to a Tree Sparrow, but it has a very distinctive bright white collar and a shiny dark head. As their name would suggest, apparently Reed Buntings spend most of their time amongst wet vegetation, but have been seen recently on farmland and occasionally in gardens. I was so pleased to make a positive identification - a first for me.

So a poor picture, but a personal achievement worthy of a journal entry.

Runrig gig - fantastic evening yesterday. Just brilliant!!
