Thank you and good bye

Today was the final day of placement for year 3 students. It felt strange when they left our teaching ward for the very last time, "flying the nest". I look forward to seeing some of them again, as new doctors of the near future.

The chocolates and wine I received were lovely tokens of appreciation but the real reward has been the privilege of contributing to their medical education. In this process I have learnt so much myself too.

As William Ostler once said: "No bubble is so iridescent or floats longer than that blown by a successful teacher".

I don't know if I have been a successful teacher or not. I am still quite junior myself but I like to think I have helped them to learn a bit more than they knew before they met me.
