The Power Of The Black Cone
Today I walked to the middle of a busy road in a Gaeltacht community in rural Galway and placed this cone in the middle the road. I am a stranger in this town but there is nobody here would ignore what I carry. It is more powerful than any stop sign, any roadblock or any police man on the road. It means that we have double parked, we have triple parked, we have parked on the paths and we will stand on the road. We will protect the pall bearers who carry our friend on her last journey. Trucks and cars stop well back and all wait patiently....out of respect.
When I lift the cone off the road normal life resumes...........I love these customs. I love that strangers recognise our right to bury our dead with proper respect and care....just saying
