I went to a fascinating training course today run by Alcoholics Anonymous. A presentation by Aidan Halligan – the first NHS Director of Clinical Governance and Deputy Chief Medical Office for England – was astounding. His mainstream bio does not reveal that, by dint of climbing to the top before an epiphany that made him want to change the system, he is in an astonishingly influential position to tackle the things he's come to care about – particularly compassionate health care for the most deprived – and to get other people to put their money where his mouth is. I found it very heartening in a system that feels frighteningly beleaguered.
