Friesian cow meets its end in West Coast quicksand
Fabulous day on the west coast where we found pancake layers of rocks, surging seas, fog, sea mist, 12+” diameter star fish, millions of mussels in various stages of life and death and rocks. I had fallen in the sea looking at the starfish when a huge wave came in and knocked me over. I twisted to run but my feet got sucked down by soft sand but I managed to hold my camera up out of the water which really wasn't all that cold. Walking back along a beach we heard a terrific noise and heard then saw a wheel bouncing along the metal guard rail beside the road. I changed quickly and then we set off up the road and asked the chap with his damaged truck whether we could help. He asked if we could give him a lift and when dups said ok he asked if he could bring his puppy. We looked back and saw the most enormous pig dog looking out of his truck but he went back to collect a slightly smaller version and they piled into our car, leaving a mate and 3 dogs to guard the three wheeled truck. We listened to his chatter about his life which seemed to have been one long procession of fun. 'I'm not proud to say I have four children by four different women. But when my mother died they all came to the funeral as they loved her. My uncle said he had never seen such an ugly bunch of women.' 'My uncle comes from Meoraki. He played for the Southland team against an Australian team who had just beaten the All Blacks. He scored all the points and knocked an Ausie out and they won!' This uncle had made him pick up a wire line when he was 6 and nearly knocked him out as it was electified. When he was in a boat the uncle told him to hold the anchor buoy up high and then hit him in the face with it. 'Never trust anyone' said the uncle. Hard lesson for a 6 year old. Then he told us about going on an 85metre fishing boat for 8 months which only had to dock every 150 days. They had been off the Falklands and the captain asked where they wanted to go so one of them said Tasmania, so they went but never got off the boat. There were hundreds of boats fishing there and all the captains came aboard for a tea party! Then the captain asked where else they wanted to go and someone said Africa so they went there for 3 weeks and fished south of Mauritius but never went ashore. When we got to his shed he gave us some frozen whitebait for supper and a deer skull with enormous antlers which we have in the back of our truck along with a very smelly fish carcase that dups just couldn't leave on the beach. Tonight it hangs on the ball stinking out the car park. We collected lots of gemstones and drift wood but I have to tell you that the black and white remains in the sand when investigated turned out to be a rock.
