Glamis Castle

Today saw me back in Dundee trying to recover my company car from the Renault Garage (long story separate issue). But I did swing by Glamis (where I had been on Tuesday, and took similar pictures, but did not use any as my Blip as the Sunset won out then).

So here we are from the main gate entrance (which is locked until the estate opens on the 19th April). Some 4,500 feet (1,371 Meters) from where I took the picture to the Castle in the picture (based on Google earth maps). With the Grampian Mountains behind.

Glamis Castle is situated beside the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland. It is the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and is open to the public between April and November.

Glamis Castle has been the home of the Lyon family since the 14th century, though the present building dates largely from the 17th century. Glamis was the childhood home of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who was married to King George VI, and was later known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Her second daughter, Princess Margaret, was born there.

Since 1987 an illustration of the castle has featured on the reverse side of ten-pound notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Glamis is currently the home of Michael Bowes-Lyon, 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, a former army officer, who succeeded to the earldom in 1987.
