A bunch of bugworts

As an only child, once you lose your parents, there's a whole lot of your lifetime that's only known to yourself. Once Mum and Dad are gone, in effect, so is your childhood.
We never had much money to spare, but occasionally Dad would surprise Mum with some flowers. These would proudly be shown off, invariably with the words, "Look, your father's bought me a bunch of bugworts ! "

It's a tradition at my church for all ladies to receive daffodils on Mother's Day, whether they're mothers or not. Here's my own rather moth-eaten bouquet.
My mother died two years ago, so there's no card to make or flowers to buy. It seems odd after so many years.
At the same time, I think of those women who might have wanted to be mothers, but never got the chance. That was me, until miss birrell finally made her appearance when I was forty and had given up on the idea.
Anyway, it's time to put the bugworts in water now.
