Upper Inverroy
Caley had a good march up the track at UI then it was home in preparation for going for Mother’s Day Lunch.
We were very well fed at Glen Spean just five minutes up the A86 from home.
With the foliage still unsprung I spied a little used railway bridge, about a mile out of Roy Bridge, which would permit access to the river just below Monessie.
To see if there was any walk potential Caley and I visited the spot in the late afternoon. It’s not suitable for a proper walk but the wee explore we had was full of interest. We found the dilapidated bridge abutments of what would have been a very useful river crossing spanning the lower reach of Monessie Gorge. About a hundred yards downstream you could see a contorted and RSJ type beam which must have belonged to the structure.
Today the river trickled through the gorge though there are a few very still deep black looking pools. Just a few days ago with Laggan dam spilling surplus water the scene here would have been quite spectacular and I would not have been able to access the gorge bottom anywhere for a photo.
As you wander upstream, and much as I expected, the railway line and river converge till the track actually runs in a rock bench cut in to the side of the gorge. Without a river crossing it is impossible to continue upstream.
All this talk of the gorge where I took a load of careful shots yet I have decided to go with this one from UI. I once got a very fortunate blip here by pure chance and despite walking past here a hundred times since have never seen the light look the same again. It was a dull hazy day and images of the mountains look like a couple of layers of dirty cling film have been draped across the lens.
It’s a site day tomorrow out west. It is going to be a sore one when the alarm goes off an hour earlier than my body expects.
