White Horse

Im not sure why these images of horses are put up onto the hillsides but im sure in years gone by they held a special meaning to the early settlers in Great Britain. This one is located just west of Marlborough on the A4 and when i came accross it i must admit it took my breath away. If anyone knows why they were carved i would be interested to know.
