The Gate Inn, corner of Newdigate and High Street
I have featured a couple of our old inns on previous occasions.
This is a third - so called because of its location on an ancient turnpike road from Nottingham that passed through Kimberley.
Situated at this point from the early 1700's until 1875 was the stone-built Chapel Bar.
The attached gate had several horizontal bars which rotated around a pivot - rather like a traditional childrens' roundabout.
The bar operator rented the site from the local landowner and was permitted to charge people to pass through in either direction. In return, and from the income so generated, the toll collector took responsibility for road maintenance in the vicinity.
Return prices for going through the toll included the following:
Sheep: one penny each;
Cows: a penny ha'penny each;
Horse and cart: fourpence ha'penny each.
