Ode to Eagerness

Excuse me, but I think your a wee bit early....

I didn't see you yesterday so maybe you've just popped out of your mossy bed on the oak trunk in the mistaken belief that spring has sprung. Bad move I'm afraid. I know the weather has been a bit odd lately, but you're much before your time.

You'd probably be happier if you were still ensconced in your hard case, slumbering for a few more months, under the pelt of green, safe from the hungry jaws of desperate rodents and winter birds.

Too late to moan now, I know, and a few short weeks ago I'd have said your days were very definitely numbered but I've learned not to be so logical. Maybe you'll see this winter through, maybe you'll become a much needed snack for some early bird. Whatever happens you've brightened my day with your optimism.

However dark, cold, lonely this place can seem, there's always someone, or something in nature to raise a smile. I don't know what you are exactly, though I suspect 'tree'. Sycamore?

But whatever your true name, I thank you. Good Luck, may the Gods of my valley watch over you.
