020414 Word-paint in Hackney
What I love about London is the incongruity, the bizarre and the unexpected that we can find on every street. I’ve had the most fabulous day doing, discussing and seeing photography. Thanks to the girls for a great afternoon and I look forward to finding some forgotten treasure. And thanks to Rut Blees Luxemburg for the private view of London Dust – a truly amazing project that just gets right to the heart of the City. However, it is Penny that I have to thank for today’s pic. The word of the day is “word-paint” meaning: ‘To describe or depict vividly in words; to make a word picture of.’ (OED). Penny took me to an Egyptian styled restaurant in Hackney, where hieroglyphics are very much a part of the fabric and as hieroglyphics are word pictures, it seemed an obvious choice. And I just loved the juxtaposition of this regal Egyptian bird with a block of flats. It is also the only restaurant that I have ever visited that has a warning sign on the toilet door about the pictures that lie within – you didn’t need a degree in hieroglyphics to understand what they were about!
Day #92 of a 365 project, where the daily pic is informed by the OED word of the day.
