Stone monsters
« Tu ch'entri qua pon mente parte a parte et dimmi poi se tante maraviglie sien fatte per inganno o pur per arte. »
The Sacro Bosco, also known as Monster Park, is a Manieristic monumental complex located in Bomarzo, in the province of Viterbo, Italy.
It is the work of Pier Francesco Orsini (1523–1585), a condottiero and patron of the arts, greatly devoted to his wife Giulia Farnese. When the wife of Orsini died, he created the gardens. The design is attributed to Pirro Ligorio.
The park of Bomarzo was intended to astonish, and like many Mannerist works of art, its symbolism is arcane.
The many monstrous statues appear to be unconnected to any rational plan and appear to have been strewn almost randomly about the area.
In 1585, after the death of the last Prince Orsini, the park was abandoned and, in the second half of the twentieth century, was restored by the pair Giancarlo and Tina Severi Bettini, who are buried in the temple inside the park, which is perhaps also the tomb of Giulia Farnese.
In this shot you can see "Neptune", the "Dragon with Lions" and the "Hannibal's elephant"
