Early thorn moth
I have been running my moth trap over the last few days, and last night While it was running I found this absolute beauty sitting on Mr U&L's aluminium ladder. Needless to say I quickly bagged him so I could get a few shots.
This is an Early thorn moth Selenia dentaria, which is commonly distributed throughout the UK, in a wide range of habitat. It has 2 distinct broods, the spring brood flying from April - May and the later summer brood (which usually produces smaller, paler moths ) flying from August - September.
This is another new species for my little suburban garden, so I am well pleased!
