We're All Going On a Summer Holiday

A very quiet grey Sunday, so with Summer holidays very much on people's minds at the moment, I thought you might like to choose yourself a bargain holiday from my 1978 newspaper. I fancy 8 days in Scotland for £70, bargain!!

Not only are the prices very amusing in this 36 year old newspaper, so are the articles and the language used, as you can see from the excerpts below. The main headline for 20 April 1978 was:

DRUNKEN YOUTHS BESIEGED POLICE STATION, COURT TOLD

Police station besieged by a crowd of chanting youths

The trouble started after police were asked to eject some youths from the bar at the Leisure Centre....

Police officers went to the Leisure Centre and saw C who smelt strongly of drink.... All the youths went towards the High Street where they were told to be quiet...

Later a large group was seen outside a Chinese take-away wrestling amongst themselves and shouting at another group opposite. They were told to be quiet but continued to make a noise. One of the youths was arrested and with difficulty put into a police car....

Later, two officers saw the 16 year old acting in a disorderly manner in the town centre, and he too was arrested....

In court all the youths said they were sorry for what had happened.

B said, "I just went stupid, that's all."

D said, "We just had a few pints and got carried away."

M said, "I am very sorry I did it. It was a stupid thing to do."

Imposing the fines, the chairman, Col WR, said all the trouble appeared to have been caused by drink and if this was the case they should keep away from it.

NB: This was not an everyday occurrence in case you're wondering!!
