April Shakespeare Challenge - Earl of Kent
Day 7 of chantler63's April Shakespeare challenge - Earl of Kent
A potentially easier one for me today, as Bedfordshire and Kent have a few things in common, both have a place called Luton (though the Bedfordshire one is rather larger, while the Kent one has been absorbed into Medway). The Earls of Kent have also owned considerable parts of Bedfordshire.
Just north of Luton is Wrest Park which was the home of the de Grey family, who supplied many Earls of Kent, while a little further north in the village of Flitton is the de Grey Mausoleum. This was founded in 1603, about the same time as the play King Lear was written, by Henry Grey, the 6th Earl of Kent who was then buried there. The Mausoleum continued to be used for the de Greys for around 250 years.
This is The Church of St John the Baptist in Flitton, the white building attached at the back is the de Grey Mausoleum.
So, a history lesson combined with an English lesson, what wonderful value you get in Blip!
