This Song Belongs to Those who Sing It
The Glasgow School of Art is taking part in the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art’s Supported Programme.
This new commission sees GSA alumnus Michael Stumpf making an installation of exterior and interior new works at The Glasgow School of Art.
This ambitious new body of work will consider the context of the art school as an ‘expanded field’, creating a sequence of points where the audience would encounter it, beginning out on the street, then leading into the Mackintosh Building, concluding in the Mackintosh Museum. From ‘The Balconies Commission’, creating new temporary ‘landmarks’ on the exterior of the new Reid Building and the Mackintosh building, to the Mackintosh building reception desk and the Mackintosh Museum itself, Michael’s work will create a journey encouraging the viewer to see a sequence of sites afresh.
The ‘Balconies commission’ and Michael’s response, captures and plays with a key moment for the art school, framing two buildings, early in their relationship, in a new conversation with each other – namely the Mackintosh Building and Steven Holl’s newly designed Reid Building, which will be officially opened tomorrow. ‘The Balconies Commission’ is the first exterior creative response and interaction with the two buildings.
I like how you can see the shadow of the Mackintosh Building on the Reid Building.
This evening sees the Inaugural Lecture in the Reid Building by Steven Holl and Chris McVoy of Steven Holl Architects. I am looking forward to the official opening tomorrow.
