Another Place
One of Anthony Gormleys iron men on Crosby beach.
I have a close friend that lives in Formby on the North West Coast. We both live busy busy lives but always make a real effort to see each other when we can and try to have at least one or two weekends away together. As her husband and three teenage children are away this week I went over for tea after work and stopped over. I managed to get out of Manchester ahead of the traffic and so was near the coast whilst it was still light. it had been wet and dreary in Manchester and on the motorways, but as I got towards the coast it got brighter and windier and the late evening sun was lovely. So I stopped and got a bottle of Champers, truffles and strawberries and then did a 10 minute detour along the coast road to Crosby beach hoping to see Anthony Gormleys Another Place sculpture before the sun went.
I have seen them a few times in broad daylight, but the evening sun on the water made them look even better. Most of them were already sunken completely as the tide was quite high. But one of the end statues was still quite clear and really did conjure up that image of staring from the coast past the windmills and across to' 'Another Place'.
The men were all constructed from iron body casts of Anthony Gormley.
I suspect they are a tad Marmitish....people love them or hate them. I definitely belong to the former. Despite the sun, it was absolutely bitterly cold in the wind.
By the time I got to my friend's my hair was wild and I had sand on my boots.
'You've been to the statues ' she said as we popped the champagne!
Lovely evening and gossipy catchup and a short break in Majorca sorted. :)
