Downtown Icons
This whirling beauty on the corner of Railroad Avenue and East Magnolia Street, in the heart of downtown, is one of my favorite public artworks in Bellingham. “Axiom Dyno Trilobyte” by Washington artist Anthony Howe was commissioned by the Whatcom Transportation Authority, in partnership with the City of Bellingham, and installed near the Bellingham Station (for WTA buses) in May 2009.
Here's a brief video of this marvelous 19-ft. tall (33 meters) kinetic wind sculpture in all its multi-dimensional movement possibilities, triggered by the wind.
And on a more human scale, I ran into another icon while I was doing errands on Railroad Avenue this afternoon — my artist friend Jesse and her service dog, Gracie. Jesse lives and makes her art downtown, and loves all the walking possibilities available there. You can see her delightful prints, cards, and magnets here.
