Catherine Lacey: BoyStory

At the hands of Reuben

Been on a bit of a treadmill over the last few days of endless chauffeuring and covering the same distances, back and forth. Crazy really. I'll be sad for Callum to leave preschool but won't miss the added miles across town every day. And oh how I'm looking forward to next week's holiday! Juggling because Jason and Kristina are both away this week, whereupon work gets done at times like this when everyone's asleep. As for the sink, that'll have to wait for another day.

Reuben's been reading Fantastic Mr Fox to us nightly, a chapter a piece. He started reading it when he was 5, but suddenly now, the story's of greater interest and so is the motivation to read. He's enthralled. I remember clearing in primary school when our teacher would read a chapter a day at school, slamming the book shut at the end to be met with great sighs from the class as he concluded "Til next time!". Brings back happy memories. I wonder if I think hard enough I can remember his name, 38 years later.
