The Evil Eye
Wasp, Vespula, either vulgaris or germanica, the the variable markings make identification tricky for a novice. Both were accidentally introduced to New Zealand, where they have become major pests. I was surprised at how hairy they are when seen up close.
Yet another dismal day. The low clouds have persisted for more than a week now. There was a brief spell (twenty minutes) when the clouds thinned a little, improving the light. I dropped what I was doing to take advantage of it, but there were few insects about.
