Haunted

This is Tuol Sleng at night, the former primary school where for a few years in the late 1970s the Khmer Rouge imprisoned and tortured 'enemies' of the regime.

I am fascinated by the tales that anyone over the age of about 45 must have about life in late 1970s Cambodia. Every time I see an elderly person on the streets of Phnom Penh I try to study their face, which is so often etched with the evidence of a difficult and sad life.

Colleagues who I have talked to about the Khmer Rouge have been happy to open up about it, so I don't think people are closed to discussing it. Note to self: become fluent in Khmer to talk to people about their experiences.
