Yang Guang

Or "Sunshine" in translation. Today we visited Edinburgh's zoo, home for a while to two Giant Pandas. The news was that Tian Tian is being closely monitored because she could be close to that 2 day-window of opportunity to make baby pandas. We thought this might mean that it was a bad time to get to see them. On the contrary, it turned out to be a good time. They had swapped enclosures yesterday and then been returned to their own enclosure, which meant that Yang Guang could smell Tian Tian's scent and so was roaming around the enclosure inbetween stuffing his face to keep his strength up for the 'ordeal' ahead. We saw him walking about, eating bamboo leisurely lying on his back, and here inside, fetching more bamboo and stretching.

The last time I saw a giant panda I was about 5, and we saw Chi Chi at London Zoo. He sat with his back to us the whole time. So this was a really exciting encounter for me. I really wish them both luck.

For privacy sake the zoo's Panda Cam has been turned off but you can find it here for future viewing.
