Aviemore
MOH and I are in Aviemore for 4 days rest and relaxation. Unfortunately we forgot it was the school holidays and the town is hoachin' (Scots meaning very busy).
Always my first port of call - Aviemore Railway Station. Unfortunately the Strathspey Steam line doesn't start running till next week so no revisiting last year's excursion - we must be better organised next time.
The current station, built to designs by the architect William Roberts, was opened in 1898 when the direct line to Inverness via Slochd was built.
In 1998 the station was restored and refurbished, and the Strathspey Railway was allowed to use the island platform. All three buildings on the island platform were restored and brought back into use, having been derelict for many years, and a fourth was built from scratch in the same style. The Strathspey Line is reached by a footbridge from platform 1.
