Gillipaw's Journal

By Gillipaw

St Conan's Kirk, Loch Awe

A gem of a place, right beside the Loch on the road to Oban. Designed and built by amateur architect Walter Douglas Campbell. Started in 1881 and completed by Trustees after his death in the 1930s.

This side faces the Loch, and has much more detail - birds' heads and owl carvings, a dog chasing two rabbits which are gargoyles, a lovely curved terrace with sundial. Inside, a blend of so many different religious traditions, lovely stained glass, and a chapel to Robert the Bruce which holds one of his bones. More details here.

We also visited the Ben Cruachan Power Station and went inside the mountain - no photography or bags on that trip. Later we walked out to the ruined Kilchurn Castle. Hoped for some evening light, but it wasn't good enough to Blip. Interesting to go inside though, good views across a beautiful mountainous landscape. Very muddy, so strong footwear essential.

Thank you all so much for all the lovely comments, stars, hearts and subscriptions on my Five Year Blipday yesterday. Rather chuffed to be up on the top line of the Spotlight for most of the day. I will catch up eventually after we get home.
