That's the best fruit crumble topping I've ever made. Except for the lack of fruit... and that it's supposed to be something else. Something I'm too embarrassed to reveal. So don't ask!
"It's dead simple."
"Just remember, one, two, three."
"One part sugar, two of butter, and three of plain flower."
(Those 'parts' being weights, not volumes.)
"Rub the butter into the flour, then add the sugar."
I did let everything warm up to room temperature. But knew before the heating stage, "it's not going to work." It didn't bind at all. Could well be that the 'room temperature' in my house is far too chilly. Should the butter be salted, or unsalted? What difference does that make? Lots to learn. There's was also the matter of the flour being of an, er, indeterminate age...
No great loss, so will try again some other day.
Spent the day pottering about inside, in the vain hope of a postal delivery. According to the tracking info, it arrived in Inverness, and was loaded into the delivery vehicle yesterday. It didn't arrive. And the day looked glorious out there. Would've been a great one for the first sea kayak launching of the year. Oh well.
A check later revealed that the service doesn't deliver on Saturday, unless the sender pays a whopping premium. Hopefully catch it first thing on Monday morning. Before heading off to work.
Bit of a wasted day.
