SNPL 02
Some male Snowy Plovers develop a golden cap early in the breeding season. Only the tips of the crown feathers are frosted with this coloration, so by late summer the cap reverts back to gray because of feather wear. It's not understood why only certain males develop the cap, nor what role it plays in the plovers' sexual selection.
