San Francisco Painted Houses
Home to the Ohlone until 1769. The Spanish arrived, built a fortress called Presido de San Francisco, and built a town called Yerba Buena. Fifty years later, it all became part of Mexico (1821).
Then in 1847 Yerba Buena became part of the USA, and they renamed it. The following year the population grew from 1,000 to 25,000 in twelve months as part of the Gold Rush.
The city was extensively rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, and there are lots of these painted houses on the hills of the city. It's a beautiful place.
