Neolithic Rock Art?

Our walking group took a local 9 mile walk today passing these Cup and Ring marks on the way to the Simonside Hills in the distance. It is thought that the cup and ring marks on the foreground stone are a form of pre-historic art found in Northern England, Scotland and other areas of northern Atlantic Europe. Many are found near sites of Iron Age forts though it is though they are likely to have been older. Nobody now knows their purpose. Unfortunately in the last few months the right hand side of the stone, not pictured, has been defaced by 3 men carving their names.

After the pull up to this location we headed over to the left of the ridge and climbed steadily up, into a strong wind, then walked along the top to descend steeply then we had a pleasant walk down through woods and farmland back to the village, just in time before the rain.

Tonight we meet and share a pooled supper. I'm off for a lie down in a hot bath first!
