Operation: let there be light!
Otherwise known as: The walls come a-tumbling down!
The house was designed and built with a very open floor plan for the main living level. Unfortunately, due to high heating costs, the stairwell was walled in - creating a claustrophobic, cave-like entry and shrouding the north-facing back of the house in darkness.
I can't ignore the fact that ripping out the walls will effectively allow all the warm air in the living and dining rooms to escape up the stairs - but I can find creative means of compromise.
The wood walls were torn down - and before winter, we will erect glass walls to prevent drafts, but allow light to flow and make the space feel open again.
Already the house is beginning to show some promise. One day it will be beautiful.
