Walking the line

Holiday day 7.
A glorious day for a walk, and almost got sunburnt.
An 11-12 mile walk around Rosedale, largely on the old Ironstone Railway (see 2 days ago) which was quite grassy in places.
In 1853 ironstone was discovered in Rosedale and a railway opened in 1861 to take it to the ironworks, rather than transporting by rail. Initially it went on the west side of the valley, over to Farndale and then down the Ingleby Incline to join with the line to the north. In 1865 the line was extended round the head of Rosedale to the East Mines until final closure of the mines in the dale in 1929.
Whilst the mines were operational the valley population increased 10-fold or more.
It makes a marvellous walk (/run) with several ruins of railway and mining buildings along the way. The biggest ruins are kilns used to partially process the stone and some are just below these ruined workers' cottages (which make a better picture due to angle, light and shapes).
I have lots of other pics from the day but opted for the history rather than the scenery.
