Kelpies come alive!

Friday 18th April 2014 saw the second of two launch nights for the (rapidly becoming world famous) Kelpies. These two 30 metre high horse head stainless steel sculptures have been built to create a hugely iconic entrance to a renewed eastern entrance into the Forth and Clyde Canal. They form a key element of the Helix project (an exciting post-industrial regeneration initiative to create a park for recreation and nature). We were particularly excited to be able to attend as the original idea for using the Kelpie legend (a mythical Scottish water horse spirit) as an iconic feature on the canals came from my wife, who works on the canals. Of course, the brilliant conception of these two sculptures came about when Scottish Canals involved the artist Andy Scott who designed these magnificent structures to celebrate the importance of heavy horses in the industrial heritage of Central Scotland. But my wife's original idea leads us to call these 'Mummy's horses' when we drive our daughter past them on the M9 motorway, and made for quite an emotional attendance at this spectacular launch event, where the Kelpies were the centrepiece of an exciting light and music spectacular!
