Cologne Carnival: Uwe, Knut and Bernd
This photograph was taken on Rosenmontag, the day before Shrove Tuesday, also the day of the great Karneval procession. The town-dwellers have been dressing up and getting drunk for days or even weeks.
Knut and Bernd were the delightful sons of the equally delightul Cologne couple with whom I was staying. However, I have no memory at all of Uwe (on the left). All that I can add is that he is wearing a German army issue cape and hat; he looks too young to have been called up for army service, so I suspect that these garments were Knut's.
We must have been near the town's centre, as its massive Cathedral is visible in the background.
