Spires and towers

When I worked in Glasgow I used to enjoy its spectacular parks with Queen’s Park being one of my favourite for its views over the city to the distant hills and mountains.

Although it is situated beside Victoria Road which was named after Queen Victoria the park was named after Mary Queen of Scots and commemorates her final battle on the site before she fled to England where she was imprisoned and eventually executed.

This view is looking north over Glasgow towards Dumgoyne and the Campsie Hills. It shows buildings mainly of the late Victorian era including Camphill Queen’s Park Church in the foreground and the majority of the church towers and spires and the distant tower of Glasgow University. Also visible are the tower blocks of the 60s and 70s and the Hydro arena opened last year with the huge 1931 Finnieston Crane in front. (see in large)

Visitors to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer will have plenty of interesting places to see particularly the great Victorian architecture and parks.
