Juelsminde Kuranstalt
I know, this is a pretty boring photo,. It is the former spa in the Jutland seaside town of Juelsminde where my mother in law lives. The Danes are way ahead of the UK when it comes to looking after older people. Gerda moved here thirteen years ago when she was in her late seventies. She has a three room apartment on the first floor, a big kitchen/sitting room and a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. It is all designed so that you can live here independently. But if your needs increase - meals, medical help or personal care, practical aids - it can all be organised quite readily. Everything is designed so you could get around in a wheelchair if you needed to. But it is a fine old building surrounded on two sides by woodland.
There are around thirty apartments in the old spa. There are also a couple of large rooms you can borrow if you want to throw a party, with a large kitchen, balcony, coffee tables and dining tables, and a piano if I remember rightly. There are several guest rooms the residents can hire if they want to have family and friends to stay. It makes a lot of sense to me, I can't see why we don't have places like this.
