An insatiable desire to be loved and respected diverted into the accumulation of wealth and resources will inevitably leave that person dissatisfied and needing more and more substitute recognition. Perhaps rather than envying, or even loathing, the rich we should pity them instead. They want what we have, and lack the awareness that will lead them there.
