Chronowski family discovery
Armed with yesterday's new information about cousins still living in the area, we headed back to Posadowa to pay them a visit.
Zenon had been told one of my mother's 3rd cousins lived at 'house 35' in the town... after driving around most of the village looking and stopping several times to ask locals, we were told the family down the hill would know more. The catch? It was not accessible by car so the 4 of us made our way through a muddy field, slipping and sliding for about 15 minutes to the bottom.
First greeted by a couple of madly barking dogs, the occupants then welcomed us with great curiosity. Much conversation took place in Polish and it was decided that our cousin did indeed live nearby, but it would require yet another 15 minute walk through even muddier terrain.
Finally arriving (middle of nowhere defined!), the 73 year old cousin eyed us suspiciously, and even after detailed explanations of our relationship he refused to have anything to do with us. Ugh! Somewhat disappointed, we turned back for the trek back to the car. Later in the day we repeated almost the exact same experience trying to visit his sister - again not receiving a very warm welcome. I suppose too much time has passed for anyone to remember the past generations that bound us. Such is the luck of the draw.
On a side note, the family at the bottom of the hill insisted that we come into their home and visit. Before we knew it, vodka and snacks were on the table and we were treated like long lost family. Not our blood relatives, but we did make new friends!
Tomorrow we leave the Posadowa area and head to Jaszczew to discover more about the Twaróg branch of the family.
