Little redhead

Charlii, Juby, Rosie, Dylan and Mylah came with me today on a walk to a new piece of woodland off the 'Downs link' where it runs through Southwater near where I live.
I was reliably informed that this woods had loads of Early purple orchids but even though we searched High and low we didn't see one!!!
We did find mud though, which wasn't good on the slippy uneven ground, and seas of bluebells meeting oceans of ramsons it was stunningly beautiful!
I was very sad to leave, but needs must and Freddy had been in his cage at home for 2 hours by now. On the way back to the car I noticed this Red- headed Cardinal beetle Pyrochroa serraticornis sitting on a leaf beside the track.
The Red-headed Cardinal beetle commonly found in woodland , parks and gardens often sitting sunbathing. They are quite large (2cm in length) and are bright red , with black legs and long black toothed antennae which this one is cleaning.
Around Horsham we also get the much rarer Black-headed Cardinal beetle, which can distinguished from this species by it's black head as the name suggests.
I love these beautiful red beetles, they are so colourful and interesting, the children thought he was great too, and all allowed him to walk over their fingers on his way back to the wild.
