Independence Arch

Malawi gained independence from Britain fifty years ago in 1964. Prior to that the country was known as Nyasaland. Immediately after independence it was ruled by the Congress Party which held power for 30 years. Since 1994 Malawi has become a multi- party democracy and is about to have a general election on 20th May.
This structure- the Independence Arch - was erected to celebrate the freedom of the country from colonial rule. It is quite an impressive structure which straddles the main dual carriageway running through Blantyre, which eventually becomes the main road to the cities of Llilongwe and Muzuzu in the north.
