Marylebone Station, Melcombe Place, London
Opened in 1899, this station used to be the terminus for the Great Central Railway from Sheffield and Manchester.
The building was designed by Henry Braddock in Edwardian Baroque style - like Admiralty Arch and County Hall in London.
The Great Central always struggled for passengers, and made most of its money from goods. Consequently, the station always had an air of peace and quiet.
The line to the north of Aylesbury was closed in 1966 and the station was nearly closed completely in 1985. But this caused people to notice the potential of the station again, and a massive refurbishment programme followed. New services were introduced to Birmingham and new platforms built. The station lives again.
